Best Headache Remedies

by on December 12, 2009

To determine the best headache remedies for your situation, the first thing you need to know is the cause. In most cases, medical or OTC treatments can only provide temporary relief. The best headache remedies are often characterized by changes in one’s habits and lifestyle.

Too much caffeine can cause headaches. If you’re a coffee-lover, try avoiding drinking coffee for a certain period of time and observe the effects. If your headaches have abated, you’ve done the right thing.

Lack of sleep is also a common cause of headache. Although adults need fewer hours of sleep than children, they should make sure that the sleep they’re getting is of sufficient quality. Disturbed and often interrupted sleep is almost like getting no sleep at all. Sleeping at the right hours also helps.

Sometimes, headaches occur as symptoms of certain illnesses as well. If you’re sick and headaches occur consequently, taking medication for the illness may also work as a remedy for your headache.

For general cases, however, here are a few headache remedies you can use.

Water Therapy – Taking a warm, relaxing bath as well as applying cold compresses or hot towels and hot fomentations can gradually relieve the discomfort caused by headaches.

Painkillers – There are various brands of painkillers out in the market today. Not all work for you so it’s best to consult your doctor for advice. Avoid regular or frequent use of painkillers as this could cause you to become immune to its effects.

Ultimately, determining the best headache remedies differ from case to case. The quickest way to finding what works best for you is either by conducting a trial-by-error experiment or asking your doctor for help!
